ZACA FIRE TRAIL UPDATES: ALL ZACA CLOSURES TO REOPEN 4/4/08

CONDITIONS:(Please notify us of any updates or changes to our current information)

SANTA CRUZ TRAIL:(4/20/08) Happy Hollow to saddle is almost single track again. Dozer left this ridge trail unstable but hikeable or rideable. To Upper Oso: First mile below saddle was burnt and had multiple slides. USFS came through and repaired this area making it as good as old. Trail below this area was in good condition and only the "cribwall" was sliding as usual. Very little overgrowth or poison oak. Water still running at all crossings at time of post. To Santa Cruz: As reported by hikers we encountered on the trail, this side of the saddle was repaired over this weekend making areas like the 40 mile wall hikeable again. They report that Santa Cruz station was not burnt and campground in good condition.

CAMUESA CONNECTOR TRAIL:(4/1/08) First 1/4 mile singletack at start of trail was bulldozed. Both Zaca and Ranch fires did not touch this intact trail but there is some damage at water crossings. Heavy growth all along trail with poison oak heavy in places.

FIGUEROA MTN AREA:(4/1/08) From the Lookout to the intersection of Zaca Ridge Fire Road and Willow Spur Trail is now a hikeable route. Although shown on maps as a trail for years this trail had been unusable for some time due to heavy overgrowth. Thanks to bulldozering for the Zaca Fire this is now 20' wide.

SANTA BARBARA CANYON AREA:(4/9/08) SB Cyn is driveable(2wd) all the way to the locked gate at the end. Buckhorn Road is in good shape with packed surface due to FS use. Sierra Madre Road to Painted Rock is in good shape with packed surface again due to FS use. Normally the surface this time of year is soft and sandy which it makes very difficult to hike/bike/ride. Zaca Fire burned all the way to the gate and beyond and really devistated the landscape along this route.
